Three Massachusetts high school seniors have died and a fourth was left in critical condition after a car crash in Florida while on spring break.

Jimmy McIntosh and Hannah Wasserman of Concord-Carlisle High School were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred on Monday, April 21, on U.S. Highway 98 in Walton County, according to reporting by CBS News.

Maisey O’Donnell and a fourth student, who remains anonymous, were transported to Bay Medical Center in Panama City. O’Donnell later died in the hospital, while the fourth student is described as being in critical condition.

Florida Highway Patrol told CBS News that the crash occurred around 9:30 p.m. when the car, driven by McIntosh, crashed into a tractor-trailer. The outlet reported that “the SUV went across the median and the other side of the highway before ending up in the woods.”

There were no other casualties in the accident.

The Florida Highway Patrol shared a photograph of the car after the collision.

An investigation into the tragedy is still ongoing. McIntosh was said to be wearing a seatbelt, but it is unclear if the three passengers were as well, the outlet reported.

In a post on Facebook from the evening of April 21, the Walton County Sheriff’s Office alerted the public of a crash on the highway, which they said would be “shut down for an extended period of time.”

The office issued an update at 5 a.m. that Highway 98 had reopened. It is unclear if the post was related to this accident.

Concord Public Schools and Concord-Carlisle Regional School District Superintendent Dr. Laurie Hunter addressed the crash in a statement obtained by CBS News.

“We are very appreciative of the outpouring of love during what is absolutely heartbreaking. We also appreciate the wish to feel purposeful and not helpless. At this time, it is most appropriate that no action be taken to honor the students without the full consent of the families and appropriate support for so many young people facing unfathomable loss,” Hunter wrote.

She continued: “We are all devastated beyond what we can understand today. I know that the difficult days ahead will be ones we face together.”

Grief counselors will be made available at the high school for students on Wednesday, April 23, and again on Monday, April 28, when school resumes after spring break.

WCVB reported that O’Donnell was a state diving champion, She was described by her coach Joe Chirico as being “humble with a kind heart.”

“The little kids looked up to her; the other divers looked up to her. It’s a tragedy that somebody at the top of their game, going to the best academic school, one of the best divers in the nation, was cut so short,” he said.

O’Donnell had planned to attend Williams College after graduation, the outlet reported.

A GoFundMe was organized to help Wasserman’s family raise funds to “cover the unexpected funeral and memorial expenses.”

Wasserman, 17, was described as “a bright light taken far too soon” by the organizer, who wrote, “Hannah was truly one of a kind: warm-hearted, kind, and always looking out for others. She had a way of making everyone feel seen, heard, and loved. Whether it was a friend in need, a classmate having a rough day, or a stranger who needed a smile, Hannah showed up with compassion and care.”

PEOPLE has contacted the Concord Public Schools and Concord-Carlisle Regional School District, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and the Walton County Sheriff’s Office for comment.
