ChatGPT’s Prompt Checkout permits you to purchase issues inside your chat

Today OpenAI is launching Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, powered by a new Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) it’s built in collaboration with Stripe.

What this means in practice is that if you are in the US, regardless of which ChatGPT tier you’re using (including the free one), you can buy directly from US sellers on Etsy right in your chat. Only single item purchases are supported at the moment.

That said, multi-item carts will be supported in the future, which is when “over a million Shopify merchants” will be added to the mix as well. OpenAI also plans to expand this feature’s reach to more regions.

If an item you’re talking about with ChatGPT supports Instant Checkout, you simply tap Buy, confirm your shipping and payment details, and complete the purchase without leaving the chat. The orders, payments, and fulfillment are handled by the merchants using their existing systems – ChatGPT is simply passing information between you and the merchant. This service is free for users but OpenAI extracts a “small fee” from merchants.

The ACP is being open sourced to let more merchants and developers build integrations. As the name implies, the ACP is “an open standard for AI commerce that lets AI agents, people, and businesses work together to complete purchases”. OpenAI bills it as “powerful, secure, and easy to adopt”.
