Apple TV is now an EGOT after Schmigadoon!’s Tony wins

The Broadway adaptation of Apple TV’s Schmigadoon! won 4 Tony Awards tonight, officially making Apple TV an EGOT winner. Here’s what that means.

Schmigadoon! wins 4 Tony Awards, including Best Musical

The 79th Tony Awards just wrapped up, and the Broadway adaptation of Apple TV’s Schmigadoon! scored 4 wins, including for Best Musical.

With tonight’s wins, Apple TV joins Netflix in achieving EGOT status, meaning the streaming service has now won at least one award in all four major American entertainment awards: an Emmy for television, a Grammy for music, an Oscar for film, and a Tony for Broadway theater.

Interestingly, while Netflix had to wait about 12 years to reach EGOT status, from its first three Emmy wins for House of Cards in 2013 to last year’s Tony for Stranger Things: The First Shadow, Apple got there in roughly half the time, starting with its first Emmy wins with The Morning Show in 2020, and completing the set tonight with Schmigadoon!.

The Broadway adaptation of Schmigadoon! was nominated for 12 awards in total, and walked away with 4 awards. Here’s the full list of Tony wins for Schmigadoon!:

Best Musical

Best Book of a Musical

Best Original Score

Best Orchestrations

Schmigadoon! premiered on Apple TV in 2021 and ran for two seasons, ending in 2023. In January 2024, show creator Cinco Paul confirmed that, although the third season had already been written with 25 new songs, Apple decided not to move forward with it.

Interestingly, Paul told Entertainment Weekly earlier this year that there had “been some talks” about bringing the show back. With tonight’s wins, fans may have a little more reason to hope that Schmigadoon! isn’t done just yet.
