Google is working on cloud-free automatic backup to Windows PCs for Android, according to a new report. This will work via Wi-Fi when your phone and PC are connected to the same network. In the latest version of the Google Play Services app, there’s a hidden information page about this upcoming feature, which you can see below.
At the bottom there’s an intriguing note that says “Samsung phones aren’t supported”. While that seems weird, the exclusion may have something to do with the fact that Samsung has its own Smart Switch app, which already provides its customers with extensive backup options. That said, Smart Switch doesn’t currently support automatic backups, unlike Google’s upcoming system.
As the screenshot above shows, to use Google’s feature you will need to go into the Quick Share app on your Windows PC and activate it. Both your phone and your Quick Share PC app will obviously need to be signed into the same Google account for this to work. You’ll be able to select photos and videos on your phone that you want to back up.
Since only Samsung devices are specifically excluded, we assume that means that this will work with any other Android phone.
