Meta, Facebook’s parent company, has introduced a groundbreaking artificial intelligence model capable of assessing other AI systems’ performance. This “Self-Taught Evaluator” marks a significant step towards reducing human involvement in AI development.

The company announced this new model alongside other AI tools from its research division. Meta’s researchers used data generated entirely by AI to train the evaluator model, removing human intervention from this stage.

The Self-Taught Evaluator uses the “chain of thought” technique, breaking down complex problems into smaller, logical steps. This approach enhances response accuracy in fields like science, coding, and mathematics.

This ability to use AI for evaluating other AI systems opens possibilities for creating autonomous AI agents that learn from their own mistakes. Many in the AI field envision these as digital assistants capable of performing various tasks without human intervention.

Self-improving models could eliminate the need for reinforcement learning from human feedback, an often expensive and inefficient process.

Other companies like Google and Anthropic have also researched Reinforcement Learning from AI Feedback (RLAIF). However, unlike Metathey typically don’t make their models publicly available.

Meta’s release included other AI tools as well, such as an update to the Segment Anything image identification model and a tool that accelerates LLM response generation times.
