Foster and Griffin tied the knot in Santa Barbara, California, in October 2014, after getting engaged in August 2013. After years of fertility struggles, they later welcomed daughter Emily via adoption in spring 2016.

Back in October 2020, Foster opened up to PEOPLE about sheltering in place with her husband and daughter outside of New York City amid the COVID-19 pandemic, saying it was “the first time that we’ve all been together for this amount of concentrated time without one of us traveling or having to leave for work every day.”

“Especially breakfast and dinner,” the Younger alum shared. “We’re all sitting at the table and now my daughter will ask everyone, ‘How was your day?’ We all like to sit down and talk and we’ve made it a really important part of our day that we come together as a family.”

Adding that the trio is “trying to make the most of this time,” Foster also said her daughter was “really thriving” because “we’re all together.”

In a November 2021 essay for PEOPLE about her adoption journey, Foster said she “was always on the fence about whether I even wanted to have children.”

“I was always very career-driven, and I had such a tricky relationship growing up with my own mom … It was never clear cut for me. I married in my 30s; it didn’t last, but one thing it did give me was this little inkling that I wanted to maybe have a family,” she added. (Foster was previously married to fellow Tony winner Christian Borle.)

But her relationship with Griffin changed that, said The Music Man star in her essay.

“When I met my husband, it was the first time that I finally went, ‘Oh, I get it. I understand why people have families,’ ” she wrote.

Foster discussed her relationship with Griffin in an interview with Broadway.com back in April 2015, revealing he took her to Turks and Caicos for a “perfect” 40th birthday getaway.

Discussing her “very talented” husband’s career, she added, “He’s like, the smartest guy I’ve ever known. He’s incredibly smart.”

Foster said they love to go to theater and watch movies together. And while Griffin showed her “classics, like Rear Window,” the actress said she introduced him to more “silly” movies.

“I’m trying to bring his intelligence a little bit down,” she joked.
