Doug Murray has known his neighbor, Teryn Carliagliamlio, since he was about 16 years old. At that time, while both were in high school, the Alberta, Canada, locals worked together at a grocery store. So when Murray, now 34, moved into his home this spring, he found it amusing that Carliagliamlio happened to be his new neighbor.

Since then, the two have reconnected and become good friends. Recently, Carliagliamlio knew Murray was working a long day and texted him to stop by and grab some leftover pasta after she saw him come home. He grabbed a container and walked over — not realizing that Carliagliamlio was on a date.

“When I got there, I quickly realized that I was interrupting their date and jokingly introduced myself as the neighbor, telling them not to mind me grabbing some of the dinner she made for him,” Murray tells PEOPLE exclusively. “Her date, Mitch, was very welcoming and even offered me to stay for a drink. Not wanting to awkwardly interrupt one of their first dates any further, I politely declined.”

“I found it hilarious that Teryn had invited me over to pick up some food, even though she was on a date. But it’s very much in her nature to look after the people around her,” the landscaper and property maintenance worker adds.

When Murray got home, he recorded a little video about what had happened to share with his friends and ended up posting it on TikTok. The next morning, he woke up to a text from Carliagliamlio telling him to check the app because the video had gone viral, amassing 6.4 million views and 4,000 comments.

“FOR EVERYONE ASKING, I’m wonderful, the date went great, I honestly just made to much pasta and didn’t want it to go to waste :)” Carliagliamlio commented on the video.

“Honestly would do the same 😂 “excuse me sir just here for the pasta enjoy your night” someone else wrote.

“Everyone needs a extra pasta boyfriend. A guy who just comes and gets the extra food you made & leaves. It’s perfect hahaha,” another TikTok user commented.

“I was shocked to see that a random video, originally meant for my friends, had gotten so much attention,” Murray says. “The comments were a mix of people finding it hilarious, others suggesting it was a cry for help because she wasn’t enjoying her date, some claiming this was the beginning of a romance novel, and many (mostly Americans) arguing over the way I say ‘pasta’ as a Canadian. All of which I found funny.”

Since then, Murray says he and Carliagliamlio have laughed about the whole incident, noting how entertaining it was to watch unfold. He mentions that despite his interruption, the date still went well.

“Teryn and Mitch are now officially dating and just recently returned from their first trip as a couple to Vancouver,” Murray says.
