An undrafted Jersey City defensive tackle who attended Morgan State University has just signed an NFL contract with the Minnesota Vikings.
According to the NFL team, after being invited to the Vikings’ rookie minicamp, Elijah Williams impressed the coaches with his stellar play, resulting in a signed contract. The team also announced the signing of another tryout player, Matt Harmon.
Morgan State made it known that Williams had joined the Vikings.
While attending Morgan State from 2021 to 2024, Williams was active in 42 games, making 216 tackles, 52 tackles for loss, performing 31 sacks, three passes defensed, three forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery. He saved his best play for his last season at the institution when he registered several career highs in games played (12) and sacks (11). The 15 tackles for loss were the second most he had in a season during his collegiate career. He had 19 during the 2022 season. Although he had four sacks as a freshman in 2021, he had at least seven sacks in each of his final three seasons.
Some of his accolades include MEAC Defensive Player of the Year, AFCA Championship Subdivision Coaches’ All-American, BOXTOROW HBCU All-American, and Stats Perform FCS All-American. He was also a Buck Buchanan Award finalist. Williams was also one of 10 finalists for the Urban Edge Network’s inaugural HBCU+ National Player of the Year Award.
He is in the top 10 in career sacks for the MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference). The 31 sacks place him in the seventh position in the conference.
Before heading to Morgan State, Williams played three seasons at Lincoln High School, where he recorded 74 tackles (57 solo) in 10 games as a senior. He was the Defensive MVP during his junior year, and during a game on Sept. 28, 2018, he collected 10 tackles and five tackles for loss, and that effort earned him the Defensive Player of the Week.
