A man is getting flak for getting upset over a lack of alcohol at a summer event hosted by his wife’s co-worker.

In a post on Redditthe 35-year-old man said he and his 33-year-old wife attended what appeared to be a “lively party” at her co-worker’s house.
The husband said he “reluctantly” attended the event, knowing “the only person I would know was my wife.” But he tagged along in support of his wife, who wanted to “meet and mingle with her co-workers outside of work.”
At one point, the husband grabbed both himself and his wife margaritas. But upon sipping his drink, he realized they did not contain tequila.
Then, he said he realized there was no alcohol around whatsoever.
He approached the host, who confirmed there was no tequila in the drinks. “Oh, I thought this was a party,” the man responded, a comment that apparently offended the party thrower.
After the husband poured out his drink, the host asked if there was something wrong with it, to which he said he “wasn’t interested in drinking straight sugar.”
Eventually, the man’s wife heard that her husband had been a jerk to the host. The man said he and his wife then got into a “minor argument” as a result.
Many commenters sided with the man’s wife and the host of the party. “You insulted the host twice in a very brief interaction because you couldn’t drink alcohol,” one person wrote. “You just embarrassed the s— out of your wife.”
“This threw me off, like was the tequila supposed to cancel out the sugar???” another person replied, noting that the man’s “rudeness and poor attitude is likely to reflect poorly” on his wife.
Several people also criticized the man for insinuating the party would be no fun without alcohol. One person said his comment “implies you can only have a good time if you can get drunk, which is pretty insulting to those whose company you’re apparently incapable of enjoying, as well as implying she’s a bad host.”
They added, “You literally poured the drink out right in front of her with zero discretion, which is also obnoxious since you just finished insulting her, and your response to her was ungracious.”
Added another commenter, “You should have at LEAST waited until you were away from the host to dump your drink, and your ‘I thought this was a party’ line was rude.”

Many people took issue with how the husband’s comment made his wife look in front of her new co-workers. “This was absolutely a ‘best behavior’ moment, and you failed,” one person wrote. “To then double down on it by saying you weren’t interested in it dry is just terrible.”
They added, “Look, you might be the kind of person who is disappointed by a lack of alcohol at a party, but at a party hosted by your wife’s new workmates, you need to put that deep, deep, into a pocket and try to impress.”
Others reminded the husband that, oftentimes, there are reasons alcohol is not made available. “Some people are sober. Some people don’t drink for religious reasons. Some people just don’t drink. Not being able to tolerate a single party without alcohol is indicative of a YOU problem,” a commenter said.
“And even if you have a problem, you can still have tact,” they added. “You demonstrated none in this scenario.”
