A 28-year-old woman seeks support from the Reddit community after a deeply personal and emotional conflict with her family during her wedding.
The situation unfolded when her father and younger sister attempted to hijack her special father-daughter dance. The bride recently married her 29-year-old husband, and details the days leading up to the wedding.

“My father decided to clear his throat, which usually meant listen, and said he has something serious to talk about,” the woman explains in her post. “He asked if he and my little sister, Sally, could have a separate father-daughter dance (at my wedding) because he is getting older and not knowing the future.”

This request caught her off guard, but she responded, “ ‘I have to definitely think about it, but I’m not too sure if I’m comfortable.’ ” Her father didn’t take her comment well, she recalls, saying, “ ‘Why won’t you just let me and your sister have our moment.’ ”
The bride emphasizes that her wedding day was about her, stating, “It’s MY wedding. MY day where it’s all about me and my fiancé getting married.”
When Sally learned of her sister’s disappointment, she got upset. “My little sister started crying and saying how I was ruining her day of the wedding and she just wants to dance with daddy,” the bride writes.
The situation escalated further when the woman’s stepmother brought up her father’s past generosity, suggesting that the bride should repay his kindness by allowing the dance.
“My stepmom decided to bring up how I had a father/daughter dance at her wedding and how I should be more grateful,” she writes. “I was dumbfounded. I reminded her it was my father’s wedding and I wasn’t the sister of the bride, I was the daughter of the groom and your wedding happened 15 years ago.”
Despite no further discussion about the incident, on the wedding day, the bride’s sister and father still managed to have their dance.

The bride describes her own father-daughter moment as “tear-jerking,” but says her emotions quickly turned to disappointment when her stepmother ushered her sister onto the dance floor.
The bride notes, “What I wished for to not happen happened. My mother grabbed me and brought me to a bathroom to clean up my face. She was just as angry as me.”

Since the wedding, the bride has limited contact with her father, stepmother and sister. She expresses regret over her father’s current emotional state but believes her actions were justified.
She says, “I feel bad because my father is now ‘depressed’ and not leaving his room. My dad is my best friend… but I think there will definitely need some boundaries placed.”
“Your father is ” depressed” because he knows he screwed up and isn’t man enough to apologise to you,” one commenter writes.
Adds another, “Girl, I would have literally turned off the music.”
