CMR Surgical Ltd. last week announced that it has closed a financing round of more than $200 million through a combination of equity and debt capital. The company said surgeons have already used its Versius Surgical Robotic System to complete more than 30,000 cases in over 30 countries.

Founded in 2014, CMR has worked with surgeons, surgical teams, and hospital partners to develop a tool to make minimal access surgery (MAS) more accessible and affordable. Versius has a compact, portable, and modular design to fit into virtually any operating room, according to the Cambridge, U.K.-based company.
Versius provides surgical options
Biomimicking the human arm, Versius lets surgeons optimize port placement. It also offers the dexterity and accuracy of small, fully-wristed instruments, said CMR Surgical. The system allows surgeons to use only the number of arms needed for a given procedure and is designed to integrate into existing workflows, it added.
With 3D HD vision, adaptive instrument control, and a choice of ergonomic working positions, the system’s open surgeon console could reduce stress and fatigue, the company added. It also allows for clear communication with the surgical team.
“By thinking laparoscopically and operating robotically with Versius, patients, surgeons, and healthcare professionals can all benefit from the value that robotic MAS brings,” CMR asserted.
In addition to performing surgeries, Versius can capture data with its wider digital ecosystem to support a surgeon’s continuous learning. Through the Versius Connect app, Versius Trainer, and CMR clinical registry, Versius can provide insights insights to ultimately improve surgical care, said CMR.
CMR Surgical sees increasing adoption
Versius is the second most-used soft-tissue surgical robot in the world, said CMR, with application across specialties including colorectal, general, gynecological, thoracic, and urology surgeries. The company attributed the increase in Versius installations to increasing adoption of surgical robotics, saying it validates the versatility of its system and strong market differentiation.
CMR is also actively expanding its clinical footprint with two ongoing clinical trials. First is a multicenter prospective trial on the use of Versius in pediatric surgery. Second is a transoral robotic surgery (TORS) trial to further demonstrate the versatility and capability of Versius in new applications.
CMR Surgical was featured in MassDevice‘s list of the 10 surgical robotic companies to watch in 2025.
CMR expects to continue rapid growth
All of CMR Surgical’s existing major investors participated in its latest funding round. It also included a new debt investment from Trinity Capital. Armentum Partners acted as CMR’s financial advisor on the debt financing.

CMR said it will use the funds to accelerate commercial expansion of Versius to more hospitals around the world, with a major focus on the U.S. market. It also plans to continue advancing surgical robotics innovation and product development.
