Acclaimed pianist/composer Conrad Tao and celebrated choreographer/dancer Caleb Teicher join forces for their innovative collaboration, Counterpoint, for a few engagements this February. Counterpoint will be presented by Celebrity Series of Boston for three performances between February 7-8, at the Boston Arts Academy (BAA) Theater in Boston’s Fenway neighborhood. Celebrity Series’s unique partnership with BAA allows it to be one of the few presenters to utilize the school’s state-of-the-art theater.

Following this, the Vail Valley Foundation’s Vilar Performing Arts Center and Vail Dance Festival will co-present Counterpoint on February 16, as part of the Therese M. Grojean Classical Series and the Vilar Winter Dance Series. The 7pm performance will be a harmonic, rhythmic and theatrical counterpoint between the two artists as they map out constellations between their disparate traditions, drive the imagination and open the heart.

Counterpoint highlights this rising duo’s distinct artistic practices — Tao’s virtuosic piano performance and Teicher’s groundbreaking tap choreography — and brings them into a shared expression that bridges their individual creative capacities. Tao and Teicher find separate but interdependent expressions through harmonic, rhythmic and theatrical interplay across a wide variety of musical genres.

The program’s stylistically diverse repertoire includes “Aria” from J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations, Art Tatum’s stride piano rendition of “Cherokee,” Schöenberg’s “Walzer” from Five Piano Pieces, Op. 23, Gershwin’s iconic Rhapsody in Blue arranged for solo piano, excerpts from Tao’s score for the artists’ previous collaboration More Forever (2019), and other works.

“Conrad Tao and Caleb Teicher are extraordinary artists individually, and together they will bring a thrilling alchemy to the winter Vilar Dance Series with Counterpoint. I can’t wait to share their brilliance with our audiences in the Vail Valley with this not to be missed performance,” notes Damian Woetzel, Artistic Director of the Vail Dance Festival.

Attendees can also look forward to improvisation and artmaking between artists and audience. “The performance is ultimately a conversation between the different art forms of music and dance, our different instruments of piano and tap dance, and the different traditions that are attached to that,” notes Tao.
