Gene Hackman’s wife Betsy was searching online for information about her symptoms before dying of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.
Between Feb. 8 and the morning of Feb. 12, Betsy Arakawa Hackman, 65, scoured the web looking up medical conditions related to COVID-19 and flu-like symptoms, according to a report released by New Mexico officialsper the Associated Press.
Her web history included searches on whether COVID could cause dizziness or nosebleeds and purchasing Boost Oxygen canisters on Feb. 11.

In an email to her masseuse, Betsy wrote that Gene woke up on Feb. 11 with flu- or cold-like symptoms. While he tested negative for COVID, Betsy opted to reschedule her appointment “out of an abundance of caution,” according to the report.
Online history also showed a search for a Santa Fe medical concierge service on Feb. 12. A review of Betsy’s phone records by investigators show she made a call with the service that lasted under two minutes, and she missed a return call later in the day.

The couple, along with their dog Zinna, were found dead in their Santa Fe home on Feb. 26.
The causes of their deaths were revealed weeks later in March. Betsy died from hantavirus, a flu-like virus linked to rodent droppings, while her actor husband died a week later from a combination of severe heart disease, high blood pressure and advanced Alzheimer’s disease. Zinna likely died of dehydration and starvation, Santa Fe County animal control previously said.
A small, private memorial, attended by the legendary actor’s three children — son Christopher and daughters Elizabeth and Leslie — was recently held in Santa Fe.
