Irv Gotti, the record executive and music producer who co-founded Murder Inc. Records, has passed away at age 54. Gotti is known for working closely with superstars like Ashanti, Ja Rule, and DMX.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of the music mogul’s death, though his cause of death still remains unknown at this time. TMZ later confirmed the story, sharing that Irv Gotti’s family revealed he passed away in New York City on Wednesday, Feb. 5.

In August 2024, The Shade Room shared that Irv Gotti experienced a stroke, according to his representative. At the time, TMZ reported that music manager Wack 100 shared news about Gotti’s medical emergency during a podcast appearance. Wack also claimed that people were allegedly keeping his health issues “under wraps.” Irv, however, openly discussed his struggles with diabetes, admitting he often skipped taking insulin. TMZ also noted that doctors reportedly urged him to change his diet, but he confessed he had a hard time sticking to it.

Irv Gotti built a legacy career in hip-hop over the years. He produced ‘Can I Live’ on Jay-Z’s iconic ‘Reasonable Doubt’ album. During his time at Def Jam, he signed the late DMX and served as executive producer for the rapper’s debut album, ‘It’s Dark and Hell is Hot.’

Gotti later launched his own record label, Murder Inc., under Def Jam, kicking things off with Ja Rule’s debut album, ‘Venni Vetti Vecci.’
