Ohio State women’s basketball coach Kevin McGuff was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle while impaired last week, PEOPLE has learned.

McGuff, 55, was charged with driving while impaired on Tuesday, May 6, according to court records reviewed by PEOPLE. The case was opened in the City of Dublin Mayor’s Court in Ohio on Monday.
The Ohio State women’s basketball coach was arrested after he allegedly drove through a neighbor’s yard and hit several curbs, according to local NBC 4, who first reported the details of McGuff’s arrest on Monday night, citing an arrest report. On Tuesday morning, The Columbus Dispatch and Cleveland.com confirmed the details of McGuff’s May 6 arrest outside his home in Dublin, Ohio.
Responding officers found McGuff behind the wheel of his car, which was parked partially in his front yard, the outlets reported.
An officer asked McGuff where he was coming from, and the basketball coach allegedly responded, “I live here,” according to NBC 4. McGuff was unable to tell officers where he was before he arrived back home, according to the outlet, citing an arrest report.

Officers said in the arrest report, according to NBC 4, that McGuff failed several in-car sobriety tests, including one in which he was asked to recite the alphabet from the letters “D” to “R” without singing. McGuff required officers to explain him the test three times and then failed to recite any letters besides “D,” NBC 4 reported, citing the arrest report.
The basketball coach was taken into custody around 8:22 p.m. local time on May 6 and released into his wife’s custody about an hour later, the Dispatch reported.
McGuff is set to appear in court for an Administrative License Suspension hearing on Tuesday, May 13 at 1:30 p.m., according to records reviewed by PEOPLE.
A spokesperson for the Ohio State athletic department said the university is aware of McGuff’s arrest and “in communication” with the coach.
“The department is in communication with Coach McGuff and monitoring the situation closely,” the spokesperson told PEOPLE. “This is an ongoing, personal legal matter, and the department will share additional information at the appropriate time.”
