Siemens AG recently launched an enhanced motion control portfolio. The portfolio features SINAMICS servo drive systems and the new SIMATIC S7-1200 G2 controller, delivering performance and flexibility for basic automation applications including handling, moving, positioning, and processing, it said.
“This holistic system approach represents a significant leap forward in basic automation capabilities,” said Craig Nelson, a product manager for motion control at Siemens Industry Inc.
The company said key features and benefits of the portfolio include:
Enhanced processing power with dedicated communication performance and extended memory
Support for up to 31 PROFINET devices with synchronized program execution
Integrated motion control technology objects for simplified system configuration
Advanced safety features up to SIL3 / PLe and Category 4 certification
Near-field communication (NFC) capability for wireless access to diagnostic
and device data
The system also offers a range of power options. SINAMICS S210 is available in voltage ranges from 200V to 400V, with power ratings up to 7 kW. It also includes a current controller response time of 62.5 µs. Finally, Siemens offers flexible configuration options for single axes, coordinated axes, and simple kinematics.
The company said its cost-optimized system includes comprehensive safety features, wireless diagnostics capabilities, and integration with the Siemens TIA Portal, making it ideal for manufacturers seeking to modernize their automation systems.

Siemens motion control system has three parts
Siemens said the system is made up of three key innovations. First, it includes the advanced SINAMICS S200 and S210 servo-drive systems.
The SINAMICS S200 servo drive system includes the SINAMICS S200 drive, a SIMOTICS S-1FL2 servo motor, and Motion Connect cables. It has a power rating of 1/3AC 200V 0.1 -1kW, an integrated brake resistor, and an external relay required for holding brake control.
The SINAMICS S210 / SIMOTICS S-1FK2 servo drive system offers a wide range of power ratings up to 7 kW (10 Hp). It features integrated safety functions and streamlined engineering, Siemens said.
Second, the drive features the new SIMATIC S7-1200 G2 controller. The company designed this controller as a compact CPU, which means that IOs are already integrated. Yet, users can equip the S7-1200 station with additional IO modules to enlarge the capabilities of the PLC.
Finally, the system includes compatible Simotics servomotors. Siemens said it offers a broad spectrum of powerful and compact servo, induction, and direct drive motors designed specifically for motion control and machine tool applications. These feature a wide range of rated speeds and torques, synchronous or asynchronous, with or without gear units.
Siemens said it focuses on building automation for industry, infrastructure, transport, and healthcare. The company creates technology for more resource-efficient factories, resilient supply chains, smarter buildings and grids, cleaner and more comfortable transportation, and advanced healthcare. In fiscal 2022, Siemens Group USA generated revenue of $18.6 billion.
