A teen is turning to Reddit for advice after an emotional confrontation with her mother left her in tears over an unwanted bedroom makeover.
The woman starts her post by explaining that her mother tends to take home renovations into her own hands during her downtime — without consulting the party whose room she’s renovating. In this case, the 19-year-old poster was her victim.
“My mom has a habit of cleaning and redecorating on her days off because I think she genuinely finds it fun,” she writes, explaining that while she’s always tried to be grateful, her and her mother’s decorating choices don’t align.

“No matter how many times I’ve told her I don’t want her to buy me stupid furniture and spend money on something I hate she does it again,” the woman confesses.
The latest makeover, she says, felt like it was “designed by a 12 year old,” with her mother seemingly ignoring her repeated pleas to be consulted before any changes are made. The new decor included bright pink furniture and AI-generated artwork, but had no personal ties to any of the teen’s passions or hobbies.
“It’s like she has no idea who I am and impulsively bought the first thing she saw on the Amazon trending page,” the poster laments.
Her feelings of frustration quickly bubbled to the surface, especially since she’s made it clear that she hates when her mom spends money on her. “I feel an extreme amount of guilt,” she admits, adding that she’s “very sensitive to change” and struggled to hide her true emotions in the moment.
The situation became even more tense when her father, who was visiting at the time, stepped in and accused her of being ungrateful. “He said I should like it because I’m a girl,” she recalls, noting that the confrontation left her feeling even more misunderstood by her family.

Despite her inner turmoil, the woman says she tried to handle the situation with empathy, hugging her mother and apologizing for being upset. Although the teen told her mom that she “really appreciated it,” she “just can’t help but be mad” about the lack of communication and consideration.
“What’s the harm in just asking me if I want it?” she questions, expressing her confusion over why her mother continues to make such decisions without consulting her. “There’s no way she thought I’d like this at all,” she insists.
Adding to her distress, the poster revealed concerns about her mother’s spending habits, especially since “she can’t afford to pay her rent.” She suspects her mom’s impulse to redecorate may be linked to a shopping addiction, and worries about the financial strain it’s causing.
Nonetheless, the woman expresses her love for her mother, but wishes she would respect her space.
“I love her. I just wish she would ask me about these things,” she concludes.
