The rugged Sonim XP Professional Thermal is provided with a FLIR Lepton 3.5 thermal digital camera

Sonim has been building rugged phones for over a decade now and its latest creation is also its first handset with an integrated thermal camera. This is aimed at professionals, people who do work in home maintenance, inspection, automotive repair and more.

The Sonim XP Pro Thermal builds on the XP Pro from a few months ago. It is powered by the same Snapdragon 7 Gen 3, paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage once again (with a microSD expansion slot). This model also features the same 6.58” FHD+ display protected with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and the 5,000mAh battery. Note that it only launches with Android 14.

The big upgrade here is the FLIR Lepton 3.5 thermal imaging camera. It works with the Sonim IRIS app, which builds on MyFLIR Pro and is fully compatible with the FLIR Thermal Studio. There is a Sonim IRIS SDK that allows custom apps to take advantage of the FLIR camera too.

Using the thermal camera, a professional can check for electrical issues (e.g. overloaded circuits or faulty transformers), assess home insulation, look for leaks behind walls and more. Sonim suggests that the XP Pro Thermal can be used in the fields of electrical maintenance, HVAC and plumbing, inspection and safety, energy and utilities, automotive, construction and home improvement, agriculture, pest and rodent control as well as first responders.

The phone is built to what the company calls the Sonim Rugged Performance Standards and has been tested with water, dust, shocks and extreme temperatures (tests for MIL-STD-810H, IP68 and IPX9K are currently being performed by a third-party lab).

Pre-orders for the Sonim XP Pro Thermal will start soon, but you better arm yourself with patience – the phone will launch in Europe and South Africa in Q2 this year (April-June), followed by more regions later on. There is no word on pricing yet.
