Brad Pitt Remembers Performing with Late Burt Reynolds: ‘He Was The Man’

Brad Pitt is reflecting on his brief time working with the late Burt Reynolds in a new book about the 2019 movie Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.

In author Jay Glennie’s The Making of Once Upon a Time… in Hollywoodavailable for purchase now, Pitt, 61, described acting with Reynolds—before Reynolds’ death at 82 in September 2018—as “one of the greatest moments I have ever had in this industry.”

“To spend time with Burt Reynolds over those days was just f—— everything, man,” Pitt said as he reflected on Reynolds’ death. “He was the guy and there will never be anybody like him.”

Reynolds, whose acting career spanned nearly six decades, was originally cast in Quentin Tarantino’s 1969-set story as George Spahn, a man who owned the Spahn Movie Ranch outside L.A. He comes into play in the movie when Pitt’s character Cliff Booth visits the ranch and finds it inhabited by a group of women associated with Charles Manson.

As Tarantino, 62, Pitt, and other actors interviewed in The Making of Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood share within the nearly 500-page compendium of stories and photographs from the production, the cast and crew were thrilled to work with Hollywood legend Burt Reynolds, who died after participating in rehearsals for his scenes with Pitt and Dakota Fanning, among others.

“To put the cherry on top of this entire poignant episode involving myself and Burt Reynolds and his involvement with Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, the last performance Burt Reynolds ever gave was saying my lines when Brad acted with him, with me directing during our rehearsal,” Tarantino said in the book. “It was the last role Burt ever did.”

Following Reynolds’ death, Tarantino cast Bruce Dern to portray Spahn, who is depicted as an elderly, blind man in the film. (The real Spahn died at 85 in 1974.)
