Claude VonStroke’s New Album, Unsuitable Quantity, Is a Direct Line to Inventive Freedom

Claude VonStroke’s first album release in over six years, Wrong Number, marks a return to the minimal, stripped-back sounds of the early 2000s that first shaped his career.

The ten-track album serves as both a creative reset and a rejection of trend-chasing, instead embracing experimentation, imperfection, and risk-taking. That ethos is rooted in nostalgia and reflection, themes VonStroke spoke candidly about in an exclusive interview with EDM.com two months ago. “I have this yearning to go back to the beginning,” he shared.

The album opens with its self-titled track, “Wrong Number,” immediately setting the tone with raw vulnerability. The song features a recording of VonStroke and his wife arguing on the phone: an intensely personal moment most people would never think to share publicly. The only featured guests on the album come from VonStroke’s own family, making the project feel deeply personal from start to finish. Both of his children, Jasper and Ella, contributed vocals to the record, which he described to us as a true “family affair.”

Among the album’s standout moments is ‘Two Line Groove,’ driven by unpredictable vocal chops and hypnotic melodies. Elsewhere, ‘A Little Drizzle’ leans into VonStroke’s weirder instincts with left-field textures, quirky vocals, and playful energy. Another highlight, ‘Busted Ass Deejays,’ blends funky elements with cheeky commentary about the modern dance music scene.

VonStroke recently wrapped a European tour centered around intimate venues, an intentional shift that gave him space to “be more of a storyteller,” “take more risks,” and “go deeper,” he told us. The run included stops in Berlin, Amsterdam, and more. “I’m only playing special rooms for people who love music, intimate spaces that can appreciate the sound and the camaraderie of being together,” VonStroke shared in a press release.

Fans can catch him next in his hometown of Detroit, Michigan, at Movement Festival, where he’ll perform under both of his aliases, Claude VonStroke and Barclay Crenshaw.
