Google updates Snapseed for iPhone with retro movie digicam

Back in June, Google surprisingly brought back Snapseed but only on iOS. The app’s latest update introduces a retro “Snapseed Camera” for iPhone users.

This Snapseed Camera is “built around creativity, control, and your personal style.” It lets you shoot with preset film filters, including:

KP1: Inspired by Kodak Portra 400

KP2: Inspired by Kodak Portra 160

KG1: Inspired by Kodak Gold 200

KE1: Inspired by Kodak E200

FS1: Inspired by Fuji Superia 200

FS2: Inspired by Fuji Superia 800

FP1: Inspired by Fuji Pro 400h

AG1: Inspired by Agfa Optima 200

AS1: Inspired by Agfa Scala 200

PD1: Inspired by Polaroid 600

TC1: Inspired by Technicolor

You also have access to your saved Looks and Edits.

The camera viewfinder is rather skeuomorphic with a rewind button animation when you switch films. Tapping the settings icon in the top-right corner lets you pick from six color themes: Editor, Dusk, Negative, Steel, Haze, and Depth. Flash controls are on the other side, while the bottom row lets you go back to the homepage and switch to the front/rear-facing camera.

The viewfinder will render the style and strength, but grain is only applied after capture.

This Snapseed Camera was released with version 3.11 last month. You can access it by adding a Control Center shortcut (search for Snapseed) or using Camera Control (Settings > Camera) on newer models.

Since last year, Snapseed for iOS has received regular updates. There’s still no updated version for Android, and that’s a real shame. The editor received a nice modernization, while this Snapseed Camera is quite fun and entirely free. It very much reminds me of the early days of Instagram and Hipstamatic.
