Madeon and Slayyyter Pull the Pin on Electropop Grenade, ‘Hearth Away’: Pay attention

Madeon, electronic music’s eternally optimistic romantic, has always built pixel-hearted worlds out of sound. But in his new single ‘Fire Away,’ he teams up with Slayyyter to burn one down.

The track unites the French electronic music virtuoso with the Y2K pop provocateur following solo performances at Coachella and serves as the lead single from his new album Victory, due out June 26th via Mom+Pop. It swaps his familiar pastel hues for smoke and ash, delivering a dark, chugging beat dripping in darkwave and French electro, a smoldering sound perfectly suited for sipping martinis while civilization crumbles.

Lyrically, the duo paints a portrait of doomed romance playing out against the literal end of the world. Madeon delivers the opening lines with a detached cool, likening a raised glass to a loaded weapon while capturing the sting of a toxic relationship returning for one final round: “I raise a glass like a loaded gun / It’s to the last of the damage done / Why does it hurt when you call my name? / It almost sounds like you’re having fun.”

The tension marinates until Slayyyter crashes in like the wrecking ball she sings about, her vocal delivery injecting a lethal voltage: “Make it the night we’ve been dying for,” she dares.

“‘Fire Away’ is perhaps the most anthemic record on the album,” Madeon said. “It’s a song about love as warfare, words like weapons of the brokenhearted. Slayyyter embodied the other side of the story and her voice took the song to another level, her performance has so much confidence and attitude. She’s electric.”

Comprising 10 tracks, Victory is Madeon’s third full-length album and first since 2019’s fan-favorite Good Faith. The project is described in a press release as a “multi-media masterpiece that sits at the intersection of punk, indie rock, electro-clash, sci-fi and high fashion.”
