ATRO has been awarded the Innovation Award 2026. The modular industrial robot kit from Beckhoff impressed the jury with its free scalability, internal media routing and complete integration into the PC-based control technology. This gives users a highly flexible robot solution that adapts precisely to the respective process and drastically reduces engineering effort.
The Innovation Award, presented for the first time this year, recognizes outstanding technological developments in robotics. The submissions were evaluated by an independent jury of experts from research and industry, who paid particular attention to the immediate user benefits and the innovative strength of the solutions. Product manager Uwe Bonin accepted the award from Frauke Itzerott, editor-in-chief of the specialist magazine Robotics and Production, at the all about automation trade fair in Friedrichshafen. “The award confirms that we have taken the right path with ATRO,” says Uwe Bonin, describing the success. The Innovation Award underlines Beckhoff’s claim to redefine machine-integrated robotics and dissolve established system boundaries.
The industrial robot modular system ATRO (Automation Technology for Robotics) eliminates the over-dimensioning of robot solutions: users receive kinematics that are exactly tailored to their specific process – from compact four-axis palletizers to highly complex multi-arm applications. The modularity enables a significant reduction in inventory and reusability of the components. The complete internal routing of all media – power, data and fluids – prevents disruptive contours and enables endless rotation of all axes.
The decisive gain in efficiency manifests itself at the control level. Traditionally, up to 80 percent of the programming effort in robotics goes to the coordination between robot controllers, PLCs and vision and safety systems. It’s different with ATRO: Thanks to the consistent integration into TwinCAT and EtherCAT, the robot kinematics merge into a regular part of the machine. Each configured system automatically recognizes the installed modules and is immediately ready for use without lengthy parameterization. With ATRO, Beckhoff offers mechanical and plant engineering a future-proof ecosystem that combines the highest performance density with minimal engineering effort and enables completely new machine concepts.
