Samsung might have a clever move planned for the Galaxy Z Fold 8. According to recent rumors, the book-style foldable’s front camera cutout could shrink from 3.7mm on the Fold 7 to just 2.5mm, giving you a little more screen on the cover display. Now, a new rumor says the Z Fold 8 Wide could get the same update.

A Weibo post by reliable leaker Ice Universe says the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide will use the same improved selfie camera as the regular Fold 8. This means a smaller 2.5mm camera cutout, which is a small but welcome change that trims the bezel and gives you a bit more screen space.

The rumor also says both phones will have a 10MP selfie camera, just like the Galaxy Z Fold 7. So, you’d be wise not to hold your breath for a big jump in image quality.

The Galaxy Z Flip 8 might get left out

But Samsung’s choices look a bit confusing here. The Galaxy Z Flip 8 doesn’t seem to be getting any camera improvements. Why give the big-screen models a cleaner front but leave the Flip out? We don’t have an answer either.

The leaker suggests Samsung might bring back under-display selfie cameras in future models. Samsung dropped this approach with the Fold 7 last year after using it through the Fold 6. The reason is simple: hiding a camera under the screen hurts image quality, making photos look hazy and soft, which isn’t good enough for video calls or selfies.

Samsung won’t bring back under-display cameras just to show off. The company will wait until the technology is ready. For now, a smaller hole punch is the middle ground.

You can expect the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Wide to be released in late July, along with the Flip 8.
