Here’s how to move networks safely and save money in the process.

1. Get your PAC or STAC code

Text one of these to 65075 for free

PAC if you want to keep your number

STAC if you want a new number

You’ll get a reply within a minute with your code and any early exit fees. The code lasts for 30 days, so you’ve got time to look around.

2. Check if you’re still in contract

If your text says there’s a charge to leave, it means your contract hasn’t ended yet. You can still plan your move and set a reminder to switch when it’s finished. If you’re out of contract, you can switch straight away and start saving. Many people cut £10 to £20 a month from their bill by doing this.

3. Find your new deal

Here are some popular low-cost options to start with

SMARTY runs on the Three network with one-month rolling plans and no credit checks

Lebara uses Vodafone’s network and often has good deals for low data users

Giffgaff uses the O2 network and lets you change your plan every month

iD Mobile, VOXI, Tesco Mobile and Asda Mobile are also worth checking

Most deals include unlimited calls and texts, so focus on the data you need.

4. Apply your PAC code

Once you’ve chosen your new provider, sign up and give them your PAC code. They’ll move your number for you within one working day. You’ll get a text to say when the switch will happen. Your old SIM will stop working, and your new one will take over.

5. Watch out for hidden traps

Before you move, check these first

Early exit fees if you’re still in contract

If your phone is part of a bundle, you’ll need to keep paying for the handset

Some networks run credit checks for longer contracts, so if that’s a problem, stick to rolling monthly deals

6. Cancel your old direct debit

Once your number has moved and your final bill is paid, cancel your old direct debit so you’re not paying for two services.

Quick tip

If you’re switching because of the O2 price rise, text PAC to 65075 and get your code today. Then shop around for the best SIM deals and make the move.
