After being hit by a cyber attack that exposed customer data and caused chaos in stores, the Co-op is now handing out a £10 thank you to members as a bit of a peace offering.
And yes, it’s real money off your food shop, not just a “thoughts and prayers” email.
Here’s what’s happened, and how to claim your tenner.
What actually happened?
In Mayhackers targeted the Co-op and obtained member data. I suppose we were lucky in that the data wasn’t bank details or passwords, but names and contact information.
It also caused major disruption, with some shops left struggling to stay stocked.
The good news? Co-op says things are now mostly back to normalwith shelves refilled and their summer BBQ campaign in full swing (complete with mountains of sausages, beers and ice cubes ready to go).
How to get your £10
To say sorry, and to try to tempt you back through the doors, Co-op is offering £10 off your food shop between 18 and 25 June.
Here’s the deal:
You must spend £40 or more in one go
You have to be a Co-op member (membership costs £1 if you’re not already)
It’s one use per member – so make it count
Both existing and new members can claim
It’s a classic “Sorry, we got hacked, fancy some burgers?” situation.
Is it worth it?
If you’re planning a weekly shop or stocking up for a BBQ, then yes. It’s basically free food. £10 off a £40 shop is a 25% discount, which is solid, especially with prices being what they are right now.
But how many people spend £40 in one go at the Co-op? It’s usually just a small top-up shop for me, so I’m not sure if many people will reach the limit to take advantage.
Final thought
Data leaks are serious, and no amount of half-price sausages can fix that, but if you’re going to shop anyway, it’s worth claiming your discount.
Just make sure to do it before 25 June, and don’t forget to scan your membership card.
